Painful fact: You need to spend some money in business. There are various business-related expenses, however we'll say that you should not have to pay a business just to be able to promote it. Be prepared to pay for marketing/advertising related expenses and office supplies for admin tasks. However, if you're doing business on the net, usually a lot of costs are much cheaper. Ok, it's always best to at least have some awareness of what will come down the road. You may want to put some funding aside now for later when these expenses occur.

Always approach this business as being a serious and real business. You will operate more efficiently if you take the time to clearly organize a plan for your marketing and other business matters. Also create and write down your goals because this will help you to stay focused. Hold yourself to your deadlines, and make your goals achievable and realistic. Don't let your efforts fall behind because it can easily become habitual, and that will only slow you, or kill your business. You will not get to where you want to be unless you're willing to work hard at it.

The best practice with your associates is to be honest with them about everything. Don't promise them megabucks right out of the gate. Best to be upfront right from the start, let them know they'll be expected to put in a good effort and work to make money, etc. If you promise them high dollar amounts too soon they will get discouraged and quit.
